What’s a smart grid? How does it work? What does it mean for me?

Electric grids help deliver power to homes and businesses across our communities and throughout the world. Today, we’re working to bring you the latest in smart technologies designed to improve how power gets to your home.

Here’s what it means for you:

Better, Faster Service

Smart technologies we’re installing on the grid, like Distribution Automation Circuit Reconfiguration (DACR), help detect outages and reroute power away from problems like downed lines to keep power on for more people. This minimizes the number of customers impacted by the outage within minutes.

Simpler, More Accurate Billing

Our smart meters provide near real-time readings and improves billing accuracies — making it easier for you to review and understand your monthly bill.

More Ways to Save

VVO, or Volt Var Optimization, is another technology that works smarter to help you save. It assures electricity is efficiently transmitted through our power lines and into your home. This reduces the amount of electricity your household appliances use, saving you an average of up to 4 percent on your monthly bill.

These smart grid technologies are all working behind the scenes to keep the power flowing — and provide information to help you take control of your energy usage.
