We know people are spending more time at home this summer to reduce the spread of COVID-19. This extra time can increase energy costs, especially with the rising summer temperatures.

Try these inexpensive and easy tips at home to help reduce your energy consumption and stay cool, too.

Embrace the natural light.

If the sun’s out, open the blinds in your house to allow the natural light to brighten the room instead of lightbulbs. Just remember, the sun can also impact the temperature inside depending on the temperature outside, so keep blinds closed when the temperatures are too high.

Avoid the oven.

Ovens and stovetops create unnecessary heat in your home. Take advantage of grilling season. Many grills have features like side burners and are equipped with enough space to make an entire meal. If you do use your stovetop, match the size of the pan to the burner, so the heat is warming your food — not the room.

Use a power strip.

If you have several things plugged in around your living room, consider using a power strip. When you leave your home, you can easily turn it off and disconnect the power supply altogether — helping you save energy and time.

Circulate air with a fan.

Set your ceiling fan to rotate counter-clockwise to push cool air down. This helps create a wind-chill effect, making you feel comfortable without using extra energy. Also, be sure to switch your fan to off if you are not in the room — fans keep people cool, not spaces.
