When temperatures spike, so can your electric bill. Try these easy energy efficiency tips to help you save energy and money — all while keeping your family cool this summer.

Close blinds and curtains to keep the sun out and cool air inside. Keeping window coverings shut during the hottest parts of the day can help reduce your home’s overall temperature.

Avoid using appliances that produce heat, like ovens and dryers, when it’s hot outside. You can reduce cooling costs simply by changing your everyday habits. Unplugging appliances or using smart power strips in your home can also lead to big savings.

Weatherstrip doors and caulk windows to prevent leaks. Even small cracks and leaks can impact your energy usage. Make sure you close all windows and doors when your air conditioner is running.

Use your ceiling fan and set it to rotate counter clockwise so that it pushes cool air down. Ceiling fans create a wind chill effect, making you feel comfortable without using excess energy. This can help make your room feel up to 10 degrees cooler.

Change the filter on your cooling system. Clean filters can lower the air conditioner’s energy consumption by 5 to 15 percent.

Set the air conditioner thermostat to 78 degrees. Adjusting the temperature is one of the most effective ways to reduce cooling costs. Installing smart thermostats can help you monitor and adjust the temperature in your home so that you save energy while you’re away or asleep.

Sign-up for our Average Monthly Payment (AMP) plan to help keep your electric bill steady as summer temperatures rise. The AMP plan spreads the costs of heating and cooling over the whole year. It makes budgeting for seasonal bill spikes a whole lot easier.

  2. I am attempting to replace Reveal 60 W / 120 Volt indoor spot lights with equivalent LED bulbs. These are used with a dimmer in a dining room. Would these be available on your Energy Efficiency Marketplace? Please advise.
    Thank you, Jeanne

    1. Hi Jeanne! Thanks for writing. Unfortunately, we don’t offer this product on our MarketPlace. We do offer instant discounts on ENERGY STAR certified LEDs in stores. You should be able to find a comparable product there. Reveal’s webpage indicates that the specs you would need to look for would be 5,000 K (light color temperature) and 700 lumens (bulb brightness). Hope that helps!
