Electricity is dangerous, and the safety of our crew members and customers is always our top priority. AEP Ohio is dedicated to ensuring that each and every member of our team returns home safely each day and night.

A vehicle accident in Southwest Columbus caused a power outage to 1,070 customers.

Our crews work to maintain the grid and provide reliable electric service, which sometimes requires operating in and around traffic. Vehicle accidents are among the leading causes of power outages. In 2024, there were 872 power outages across our 61-county service territory caused by vehicles colliding with our equipment.

“The risk of being struck by a distracted driver is one of the most dangerous hazards our employees face while working on or near the road,” said Joshua McQueen, AEP Ohio emergency preparedness manager. “We take work zone protection seriously, as it is essential for keeping our employees safe and helping drivers reach their destinations without incident.”

Here are some helpful driving tips to ensure the safety of our crews and yours:

  • Drive Defensively. Maintain ample space around your vehicle to allow for stopping or swerving when necessary.
  • Avoid Distractions. Continuously scan the area around your vehicle and check all mirrors to stay aware of other drivers’ actions. Refrain from using cell phones while driving. In Ohio, using or holding a cell phone in your hand, lap, or other body parts while operating a vehicle on the road is illegal.
  • Be Weather Aware. Slow down if visibility is compromised or if the road is rough or wet.
  • Obey All Traffic Laws. Adhere to speed limits, passing restrictions, traffic signals and stop signs.
