At AEP Ohio, we know that you depend on reliable electricity to power your life. Our crews work diligently to inspect, upgrade and repair the power grid throughout our service territory — aiming to deliver power without interruptions.
Focused Improvements, Ongoing Maintenance
In 2025, we launched an initiative to reduce the frequency and duration of power outages across the 61 counties we serve. While our crews work year-round to maintain the electric grid, we doubled down on the areas experiencing the most significant challenges. Teams identified more than 400 circuits where aging infrastructure, trees and animals (like birds and squirrels) were causing recurring outages and prioritized inspections, upgrades and repairs in those areas.
“Our dedicated teams are in the field every day proactively inspecting, repairing and upgrading equipment on these circuits, ensuring we address issues before they lead to future outages,” said Ben Yates, director of projects at AEP Ohio. “Our goal is for customers to experience fewer and shorter outages, especially during severe weather.”

We’re continuing these efforts in 2026 with plans to inspect nearly 400 additional circuits, which includes assessing more than:
- 9,300 miles of power lines
- 308,000 poles
- 146,000 pieces of equipment
Additionally:
- Engineering teams are reviewing over 200 of these circuits to add or upgrade overcurrent protection devices.
- Forestry crews are hard at work trimming and removing trees along over 7,900 miles of power lines to reduce the risk of tree-related power outages.
“This is one of many ways we’re working to provide customers with safe and reliable power,” Yates said. “With the success we’ve seen so far, we’re excited to build upon these efforts in other areas.”
We appreciate your continued support and patience as we work toward a future with power without interruptions.
