If you ask the student musicians of the Canton Youth Symphony (CYS), they will tell you there is nothing like being a part of an orchestra and the power of the music they create. In addition to developing an appreciation for classical music, the students are also learning to become lifelong fans of the arts. AEP Ohio is proud to help support these aspiring musicians.
Since 1961, CYS has helped develop the skills of over 2,000 musicians who have participated in the program. It has also introduced them to new friendships and created lifelong connections. The symphony is a unique opportunity to play alongside other students from across northeast Ohio and is meant to supplement—not replace—school-based instruction and ensembles. CYS gives elementary- through high school-level musicians an opportunity to experience what it’s like to play in a professional atmosphere while performing an array of challenging orchestra pieces. To support the growth of their musicians and make it a continuing, joyful experience, CYS offers three different progressively challenging ensembles.
Sue Marzano, a consumer program coordinator at AEP Ohio in Canton, volunteers with CYS. A lover of music herself, the excitement she sees in the students warms her heart.
“I volunteered to help with the auditions this year and it was precious,” said Sue. “The kids came in nervous and full of anxiety, wondering if they would be selected. It is a big deal for the students, and I love seeing how excited they are about music.”
AEP Ohio is proud to support organizations that are important to the communities where our customers and employees live and work. Recently, AEP Ohio awarded a grant to CYS to provide financial assistance to students and additional coaches for extra instruction. Thank you, Canton Youth Symphony, for creating opportunities for students to grow—and thrive—in their musical development.
