In recognition of the recent 811 Day, and with the fall planting season rapidly approaching, AEP Ohio is reminding you to call 811 at least 48 hours before doing any digging on your property.

Electric, gas, water, sewer and cable utilities use underground lines to deliver services to customers. Striking these lines can cause serious or fatal injuries, power outages and costly repairs.

Help keep yourself, your family and your neighbors safe by having your underground utility lines marked. Start the free process by calling Ohio Utilities Protection Service (OUPS) at 811 or submitting an online dig request at oups.org/edig.

Remember: No digging project is too small to call. The location and depth of utility lines can vary due to erosion, uneven surfaces and previous digging projects, meaning there’s a risk of hitting an underground utility line even when digging just a few inches.

Check out our slideshow for lesser-known projects that also require a call. For more safety tips and resources, visit AEPOhio.com/Safety and Ohio811.org.
