Jill Newland: A Work Ethic With No Bounds

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we’re recognizing a few women at AEP who inspire us. 

Meet Jill Newland. Jill has worked at AEP Ohio for more than 20 years and serves all of Western Ohio. She helps oversee our electric meter teams in the field  — making sure meters are safely installed, working properly and read correctly. 

During major storms and outages, Jill can be seen securing materials: making sure the supply of wire, transformers and other equipment are available and accessible for lineworkers and meter electricians to work swiftly and safely to restore power. 

How did you get into this business? 

A family friend noticed that I was always outside working with my hands and thought I would be interested in the meter technician opening. I was there every morning to drop my resume — I think I may have annoyed the lady at the front desk. But I was raised, if you want it, you get determined and you strive for it.

You sometimes find yourself working with customers in crisis. How do you handle those difficult situations?

I respect them. They may be going through tough times. If I can’t help them, I always direct them to someone in their community who can. I stay in contact with community organizations so I know the different programs that are available — I think it’s important to let them know there are people willing to help.

What advice would you give to young women and girls looking to pursue a career in energy/STEM fields?

If you love being outdoors and working with your hands, explore potential career options early. Talk to your school’s guidance counselors about a career in energy — there are many good pathways.

Who inspires you?

My mother worked 38 years in a factory — she worked hard. She did everything and never missed any of my games. She always told me, don’t hold yourself back and go for it. I take after my mother.
