  38. Currently, I am studying for the CAST exam. Specifically to become a lineman. I was wondering what index score is within hiring parameters for AEP? Also, if I attain beginners CDL before hire would that expedite the process of a hire? Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    1. Good questions, Keith. Having a valid CDL license would make you a more viable candidate for a lineworker job but it’s not a requirement for a beginner-level position. Having a beginner’s permit is also helpful but it wouldn’t expedite the hiring process. As for the CAST test, at AEP we report results only as Pass or Fail. We don’t provide our required index score. Good luck!

    1. Good question, Ethan. No you don’t need any experience — you just need a high school diploma and you have to pass the CAST assessment. Go to AEP.com/careers and check out a Line Mechanic-D job opportunity to learn more information about applying. Good luck!

I am hoping for an interview. Thanks

      1. Hi- I had an interview several weeks ago. They said I would hear back the next week. But I have not heard back. Will I get a response from AEP regarding my interview? Also, how long are the results from the CAST test good ? thanks…

        1. Hi Thomas! Thanks for checking in. I sent your message to our Human Resources team and someone will respond to you shortly. Good luck!

          1. I never see any jobs for Wheeling WV AEP on the AEP Careers/Job site. Does Wheeling post elsewhere? I live near Wheeling and have completed Lineman School and have a CDL. Thanks

  56. I applied for a Line Mechanic D position locally, my application status went from “applied” to “under review.”
I then applied for another Line Mechanic D position that was also within your desired distance from me as I heard from a source that the first one was filled. The second one is still listed as “applied.”
Do I need to withdraw from the first one in order for the second one to process in the portal?
Also wondering if I should have heard something when my original status switched to “under review?” Or why I was not informed that the job was no longer available.
Any information helps and I would love to speak with someone personally about how this hiring process works exactly.

    1. Hi Tyler. Thanks for your note. I have reached out to our Human Resources group and you can expect to hear from someone soon. Have a nice day!

  57. Hello!

I am inquiring to see when you will be doing the hiring for the Lineman D position? I just applied yesterday. Was wondering if it will be for the new year coming up? Very interested, thanks!

    1. Hi Brandon. If you applied for a position yesterday, those positions would not be filled until sometime in 2022. Once the recruiter reviews the resumes for this position, you will probably hear something one way or the other. With the holidays upon us, it may be a few weeks before you hear from the recruiter.

Thanks for your interest with AEP.

  64. If someone does not pass the CAST test the first time they apply, does that automatically eliminate them from being able to take it again?

    1. Hi John. Thanks for reaching out. Our human resources informed me that a person has to wait three months before they can take the CAST test again. Additionally, they would need to apply to another position in order to be scheduled for testing.

      1. If I applied for a Lineman Mechanic D position (failed the CAST test the first time), can I apply for that same type of position again after three months? Or does it have to be a different type of position completely?

You will receive a notification if you are not selected to continue in the hiring process, but the timing of that email can vary. The invite email will provide the information and instructions.

  79. Hello,
I am very interested in a career change to become a lineman for the Columbus Ohio area and I was wondering when/if there is a specific time of year to apply for an apprenticeship. I know mechanic D is the job posting but I haven’t seen it yet for Columbus. I was also wondering if obtaining a cdl needs to be done before the apprenticeship or is it typically during. Any information is greatly appreciated, thank you.

    1. Great questions, Dennis. You can apply for a line mechanic-D position any time of year. If there aren’t any jobs currently available, just keep checking back. As for the commercial driver’s license, it is not a requirement when applying. Good luck!
