Helps With Outage Restoration
The new smart meter provides information to our crews that can help us get your power on more quickly.

FACTORS THAT CAN IMPACT YOUR ELECTRIC BILL

Another benefit of your new smart meter is more accurate readings and eliminating the need for our crews to come out and manually inspect your meter. These more accurate readings may lead to changes in your upcoming electric bills. Additional factors that contribute to your bill include:

Weather
Your energy usage can creep up quickly during the hot summer months or cold winter months, which means higher-than-usual electric bills.

Extra Billing Days
It’s normal for the number of days in each billing cycle to change from month to month. More days per cycle will cause your bill to be higher. You can see the number of days in your billing cycle on the front page of your bill.

Rate Changes
The rates you pay for each kilowatt-hour of electricity you use may change several times each year. This is because AEP Ohio’s rates go up and down based on how much it spends on certain types of costs, such as transmitting or distributing power to your location, tree trimming and storm restoration. All of AEP Ohio’s rates are approved by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) before they are charged to your bill.

Energy Supply Rates
AEP Ohio delivers energy to your home and maintains power lines and equipment. Customers who select another company to supply their power through our lines may have different rates. See page three of your bill to learn about choosing who generates your power and visit energychoice.ohio.gov to compare energy providers and their rates.

  1. Like why my bill might be different, you say? You mean, why my bill might be or( will be) higher 🤔.

  2. I do not want a new smart meter. The one I have is already messing with my health. Please do not install.

    1. Hi Debra. If you own your property, you can request not to have a smart meter installed prior to your planned installation date. If you do so, you will pay a monthly fee of $24. Please note: this monthly fee option does not guarantee an actual meter read each month and monthly bills at times may be based on estimated usage with a true-up to actual usage upon AEP Ohio obtaining an actual meter read. However, AEP Ohio will attempt to read the meter at regular monthly intervals. The monthly fee of $24 will be billed monthly on your bill and is considered a tariffed charge. In addition, opt-out service does not guarantee that you will retain your existing meter. AEP Ohio may replace meters for customers on opt-out service with meters that do not have one-way or two-way communications. Please call us at 888-883-6977 or reach out via email.

AEP Ohio may refuse to provide advanced meter opt-out service in the following circumstances:
      – If such a service creates a safety hazard to consumers or their premises, the public, or our personnel or facilities.
      – If a customer does not allow the electric utility’s employees or agents access to the meter.
