We’ve heard your questions about animals on electrical equipment, if bills increase after smart meters are installed and why lights flicker even though the power doesn’t fully go out. We are committed to keeping you informed about your electric service and the grid that brings you power. We’re answering our customers’ most asked questions below.

Why do birds perch on power lines and is it safe?

Power lines and poles are built to withstand weather, wildlife and years outdoors, so it’s common to see birds using them as a high lookout point. Most of the time, this is completely safe for the bird.

A bird can safely perch on a single wire because it’s touching only one thing at a time. Electricity needs a path to travel, and without a second point of contact — e.g., another wire, the pole or the ground — the electricity stays in the line where it belongs.

Problems can happen when an animal or other object touches a wire and something else at the same time. That can cause electrocution and power outages.

To help prevent these kinds of issues, AEP Ohio installs wildlife-protection equipment, and our crews adjust their work when they spot nests or animal activity on electrical infrastructure. Keeping animals safe also helps keep your lights on.

Why did my bill go up after AEP Ohio installed a smart meter?

Smart meters give you more accurate readings and help AEP Ohio respond faster to outages. They do not increase your usage or change your electric rates.

If you see a higher electric bill after a smart meter was installed, it could be for one of these reasons:

  • More precise readings: In some cases, an older meter may have been running slow. A new meter better records your actual usage.
  • Higher energy generation or transmission rates: These charges make up a large portion of your bill and are set outside of AEP Ohio’s control.
  • Increased usage at home: Seasonal changes, added appliances, working from home and hosting guests can all raise energy use.

If you’re unsure why your bill has changed or if you’re having trouble paying, call us anytime at 800-672-2231. We’re here to help.

Why do my lights flicker sometimes even though the power stays on?

Brief flickers or dimming lights can happen for various reasons — some on the electric system side and some inside your home or business.

What causes flickers?
Momentary outages on the grid: Trees, animals, weather and equipment issues can cause a very quick interruption. AEP Ohio’s smart grid technology can detect a problem and restore power in seconds, sometimes before you even realize it happened.

Issues with customer equipment:

  • Loose or damaged wiring.
  • Problems with the weather head or service entrance.
  • Too many devices on the same circuit (for example, lights dimming when a large appliance turns on).

What should I do?
If the flicker is tied to something inside your home (like an appliance turning on), contact a licensed electrician.

If you’re experiencing repeated momentary outages or flickers that aren’t tied to anything indoors, call AEP Ohio at 800-672-2231 so we can investigate.

Your safety and comfort matter to us, and we’re always here to help you understand what’s happening with your power.
