At AEP Ohio, our dedication to safety and exceptional customer service is at the core of everything we do. Recently, a family in Findlay faced a challenge that highlighted these principles when they planned to extend the second story of their home. Unfortunately, the previous homeowner had planted a tree directly beneath their power lines, causing it to grow right into the equipment.
“We never had a power outage because of the tree, but we knew it was dangerous having it there,” said current homeowner Laura Smeltz. “It had to go. That’s when we called AEP Ohio to help.”
Line Servicer Nick Siferd answered that call.
“He was so nice and explained what needed to be done to my husband and father-in-law, who were in charge of the project,” Smeltz said. “He came early, surveyed the situation and was very flexible in coming back when we were better prepared.”
Siferd explained how he would safely de-energize the power lines so the tree could be cut down and removed. Once that was done, he could reconnect the power.
“He came back at a great time and not only disconnected and reconnected the power very fast, he was very kind, helpful and efficient,” Smeltz said. “We were prepared to be without power for quite a while, expecting the process to take a long time but because of his help, we were down only about 30 minutes!”
With two young children at home, the family worried about being without power in the July heat. Thanks to Siferd’s quick and safe work, they were able to enjoy their air conditioning again and safely continue their house project without delay. Safely removing that tree was the first step, and AEP Ohio was there to help make it happen.
“He was working his tail off in the heat and sun and didn’t bat an eye to extend himself to make our lives easier. We were so grateful,” Smeltz said.
