Les Davis, a distribution system supervisor at AEP Ohio’s Coshocton and New Philadelphia service centers, had a childhood dream of becoming a lineworker, driving bucket trucks and working outdoors. After a short stint working in a coal mine, Davis’s professional journey began in earnest at the Conesville Power Plant as an electrical team leader. Now, nearly 19 years later, he manages more than 30 overhead lineworkers in eastern Ohio.
Davis thrives on the ever-changing nature of his work and takes pride in empowering his team to deliver essential services. “Everybody needs electricity,” Davis said, highlighting the impact his employees have on everyday life. “Walmart isn’t open if my crews aren’t successful.”
Beyond the job, Davis extends his passion for leadership to local community involvement. In addition to serving as a member of the local school district’s youth baseball and softball board, he has coached youth teams for the past five years. For Davis, coaching is about much more than teaching the fundamentals of the game — he seeks to instill valuable life lessons like self-discipline and teamwork. “It’s fun to win, but it’s even more rewarding to help the kids become good people,” he said.
The holidays are a favorite time of year for Davis and his family, who own and operate a Christmas tree farm. “I love the chance it gives me to connect with people and bring a little extra joy into the world,” Davis said. In winter, he also coaches a youth basketball team.
Davis believes in the importance of maintaining a personal connection with AEP Ohio customers. “Here in Coshocton and New Philadelphia, we just go talk to our customers,” he said. “It’s kind of old school, but at the end of the day, it’s about being kind to people.”
