Why Clear Access to Pad-Mount Transformers Matters
You’ve probably seen those green metal boxes sitting quietly in yards or near sidewalks. They’re called pad-mount transformers, and they play a big role in keeping your lights on. Inside each one is equipment that reduces high-voltage electricity from our power lines to the safe level used in homes and businesses.
At AEP Ohio, we like to think of each transformer as a steady neighbor — strong, silent and always working. In our new video, you’ll meet “Paddy,” a friendly reminder that these boxes need just one thing from you — space.
When shrubs, fences, decorations or other obstacles crowd a transformer, it makes it more difficult and less safe for our crews to reach the equipment. If there’s an outage or maintenance issue, extra time spent clearing obstacles can mean a longer wait before your power is restored and more inconvenience for the property owner. Keeping the area clear also protects anyone nearby because transformers contain high-voltage parts that should never be touched or blocked.
To help keep everyone safe and your service reliable:
- Leave at least 10 feet of open space in front of the transformer’s doors (the side with the lock and warning stickers).
- Leave 3 feet of space on all other sides.
- Avoid planting bushes or placing rocks, decorations or landscaping directly around it.
- Do not build structures like fences, sheds or buildings within 10 feet.
That little bit of distance makes a big difference. It gives our crews the room they need to work safely and gets your power back on faster if something goes wrong.
So next time you see one of those green boxes, remember Paddy — and give him some space. Together, we can keep the power flowing safely and reliably.
